Smith College has awarded an honorary degree to Rachel Levine, the U.S. Assistant Secretary for Health under President Biden. The decision has incited protests from Women’s Declaration International, an organization advocating for sex-based rights. The decision by the female-only college follows ongoing opposition to the acceptance of male students identifying as women. Since 2015, activists have opposed the acceptance of male students identifying as women.
Smith College labeled Levine, an “accomplished physician, public health expert, and LGBTQ+ advocate.”
Critics, including women’s rights leader Riley Gaines and attorney Kara Dansky, have challenged Levine's recognition in the context of women’s rights.
Gaines stated, “Smith College, a private women’s college in Massachusetts, awarded Rachel Levine an honorary degree today.
He then delivered the commencement address."
Gaines added, "Ladies, congratulations — your graduation was led by the very thing feminism was allegedly fighting.”
Levine was the first openly transgender four-star admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service and faced criticism for advocating transgender medical treatments for minors and for enforcing strict COVID-19 policies.
The Daily Signal's Tyler O’Neil wrote, “In a piece of fresh Orwellian insanity, a women’s college granted an honorary degree to Rachel Levine, a man who has fathered children and who has weaponized his medical position as a doctor to attack fairness in women’s sports, privacy in women’s intimate settings, and a generation’s ability to have children.”
