As of mid-2025, U.S. crude oil production is averaging 13.4 million barrels per day (bpd)—up from 13.2 million bpd in 2024.

That’s not a decline; it’s a modest increase, even if growth has slowed compared to previous years.

Short-Term Fluctuations

The growth rate has tapered off due to lower oil prices, which have led producers to reduce drilling activity.

The EIA expects production to dip slightly from its Q2 2025 peak of 13.5 million bpd to just under 13.3 million bpd by late 2026, but that’s still historically high. 

So while the pace of growth is slowing, the idea that U.S. oil production is falling outright is misleading. It’s more accurate to say it’s stabilizing at a high level, with future trends shaped by market prices, export demand, and energy policy.

Uncompleted wells are not yet profitable. The number of drilled but uncompleted wells (knows as DUCs) reflects oil producers' willingness to invest in drilling new wells and their expectations for oil prices and demand. When the DUC count increases, it means oil producers are optimistic about future demand.
