Watching an Indy Documentary, I noticed how the rural folks in Turkey were considered quaint for the backwardness. Their primitive and toothless lives were not mocked. Their total lack of education or modern facilities was not demeaned. Etc, etc.
If Americans consider our poor, uneducated primitives, we see them mocked and laughed at.
The similarities are numerous...
Why are primitives found elsewhere in the world honored and ours disrespected?
It's a great topic. For me, it comes down to reactivity. I was raised in an environment that could turn stupid and dark so quickly it would make your head spin. When I see hillbillies, I see a threat. I see danger. I see that which I worked so very hard to put behind me, to transcend. And that's not to say I was raised amongst hillbillies. I was not. I was raised by and among rednecks. But there's a good bit of overlap. A redneck is essentially a hillbilly whose people moved to flat land and took jobs in mills and such. One step up, in my judgment.
Stupidity is anathema to me. And it's just a fact that the smarter a hillbilly is, the more likely he is to move out of the hills and make something more of himself than a dissolute, semi-employed barbarian (no offense to hillbillies)..
Then there's the image of the hillbilly in popular culture. Dueling Banjos, anyone? The Hills Have Eyes? Even the Beverly Hillbillies, while all in good fun, made being a hillbilly not cool. Being a hillbilly is not something one aspires to, but something one is born into. "I want to be a hillbilly when I grow up," said no kid ever.
Then there are the tropes about incest. And as a fellow who travelled a good bit through West Virginia, I can verify that the tropes are based in reality. And there is no lack of evidence - nor are cultural anthropologists in the dark about root causes. The truth is, a lot of hill people got cut off to the point that marrying cousins became necessary. And that's no big deal, really. Until you do it for generations. Then you start throwing idiots and criminals and deranged, idiotic criminals. You get anti-eugenics. And it's ugly.
I don't think that an aversion to hillbillies is altogether unjustified. Ignorance, poor breeding, a dissolute lifestyle - these things ought to cause aversion, oughtn't they? What would aspiring to LESS than being a hillbilly look like?
I cannot speak for why Turks are not as offput as many Americans are by dirty clothes, poor hygeine, toothlessness, tiny vocabularies, functional illiteracy - your basic hillbilly dark side. I am utterly without a clue what the Turks find quaint or charming about THEIR hillbillies. Never been to Turkey. But ours raise alarm bells in me and put me ill at ease. And these days instead of moonshine the mother **** are getting into meth. There's nothing quaint about a hillbilly meth head.
And don't take this as picking on hillbillies. Retards and cripples put me off my feed, too.
At the same time, I hold herbalism and self reliance in very high esteem. I just prefer people who are knowledgable about folk remedies and big on self-reliance to shower regularly and wash their **** clothes - maybe read a **** book from time to time (or at least not call me a bookworm when they catch me at it). I can bend on the grammar. But the hygeine is just always gonna be an issue. Cleanliness is next to godliness, and hillbillies are next to me as little as possible.
