Univ. of Minnesota students “will pay a new $200 athletics fee this year” to offset the “substantial price tag for paying student athletes” in the wake of the House settlement, according to Erin Adler of the MINNESOTA STAR TRIBUNE. Even with the addition for the first time of the $100-per-semester fee, the athletics budget is $8.6M short, though school officials said that they are “hopeful they can close the gap.” The new fees are “drawing ire from student government leaders and come at the same time as a significant tuition increase.” Minnesota AD Mark Coyle said in an interview this week that “the fee is not uncommon among other institutions and helps maintain athletic facilities used by the student body.” Paying student athletes the full $20.5M in revenue sharing will make up 12% of Minnesota’s $174.2M athletic budget for 2026, “more than the cost of scholarships, maintaining facilities or paying down debt.” The “nearly” $9M shortfall is after “the new student fees are accounted for; they are expected to bring in” $7M. Minnesota is not the “only school charging athletic fees,” as six other Big Ten institutions -- Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Northwestern, Rutgers and UCLA -- do the same. South Carolina and Louisville have also recently added student athletic fees...



So everyone doles out an additional $600 a year to support a token few who want to play games for a living...

They fail to mention the significant increase on tuition is 7% this year as well...

what about those who don't care and just wanna go to school just to learn?

Sports in school is WAAAAY overrated.
Learning sportsmanship is a good thing, but do you really need a $30million stadium to teach it?

Exactly...it proves college sports is big business...it's one thing if the athletic program pays for itself through ticket sales, but this is pure ****...
