The short answer is, yes, duplexes do share vents.
It can be particularly nasty if the people in the next flat smoke or cook pungent food every single day without opening a window. But again, such is life. Many duplex blocks are built fairly cheaply, hence why they construct two homes to share one vent.
More often than not, you’ll find that you are sharing a vent with someone else.

I live in a house but the neighbors across the street have bonfires all the time when its nice so I gotta shut the windows if the breeze is blowing my way otherwise place smells like charcoal.
Technically fires in town is Illegal but the cops got much more important things 2 do than telling my neighbors put out their fire so ya adjust to it

My place is old kinda a dump had roof done 10 years ago or so and did the floors and new carpet 5 years or so ago but I thank my folks for leaving it to me all paid off or Id probably be living in a tiny apartment or a trailer park .
Meantime city getting on me about the porch so thats gonna be next

He forgot the wildfires heck the whole west for that matter.
I remember still driving truck during covid and just fires everywhere from colorado all the way to west coast.
Even here in the Midwest up in northern Canada is a big wild fire and the smoke blows down here causing smog and air action days even though we are something like a thousand miles away from the actual fires
