A contract is a contract. A loan is a contract. You have to pay off any loan: auto, home, student loan. The moral of the story is don't sign on the dotted line if there is any doubt you can't meet your obligations in the loan contract. No one else should be held responsible for your negligence and stupidity.

As of August 1, millions of federal student loan borrowers are watching their balances grow for the first time after several years. The interest-free forbearance period under the Biden administration’s SAVE Plan has officially ended, meaning anyone still in the program without a new repayment plan will begin accumulating interest again.

I started a thread about this. I like you sir, you are a good man. However, I have to respectfully disagree. Student loans are different than other loans. Student loans are paid by taxpayers. Students are also taxpayers. That means they have to pay back money that is already theirs anyway. That's like saying we will have to pay our social security back after we use it for a given amount of time. We have been paying into social security, it's our money. We don't have to pay it back. Same thing with student loans. It shouldn't be considered a loan anymore than social security should be considered a loan. The other loans are not taxpayer money. Therefore, people should pay those back.

Thank you, Vegas....So, maybe I am misunderstanding something here. Social Security cannot and should not be compared with a student loan. Of course we don't have to pay SS back. It's not a loan. We earned it. We must have 40 quarters and be a certain age to qualify. I worked and payed taxes for 44 years. A 19-year-old living with mommy and daddy, does not deserve a gov loan. And, you do not have to be a taxpayer to get a student loan. So, someone who has never paid taxes can get a "FREE" ride. I respectfully stand my ground my friend.  Image

Does a student have to be a taxpayer to get a student loan

No, a student does not have to be a taxpayer to obtain a student loan. Student loans are typically funded through private or government sources, and the borrower is responsible for repaying the loan. However, the student may need to file a tax return if they have taxable income, such as from part-time or full-time employment, which may affect their tax situation and eligibility for certain tax benefits.

I agree that the fed gov should be out of the student loan business

Essentially, having 40 quarters means you have contributed to the Social Security system long enough to be eligible for benefits

I couldn't disagree with your post more. Students are not tax payers, if they were, why would they need a loan in the first place?

The Trump Taj Mahal casino took its final bets on Monday, and it's been through bankruptcy more than once in its troubled history. However, even before the Taj Mahal opened its doors in 1990, there were signs of trouble. One financial analyst predicted — correctly — that the casino would flop. He was promptly fired, under pressure from Donald Trump.

In order to buy the unfinished Taj Mahal casino and get it open, Donald Trump raised $675 million, mostly from junk bonds. Roffman was skeptical that any casino could make enough money to cover the interest payments on those bonds. So when reporters from The Wall Street Journal called, that's exactly what Roffman told them.

A few weeks later, the story ran in the newspaper. Trump was not happy. He faxed a letter to Roffman's boss at Janney Montgomery Scott with an ultimatum: The firm had to dismiss Roffman immediately or issue a public apology. If not, Trump threatened "a major lawsuit against your firm," Roffman says.

History will be RUTHLESS.

Then Roffman's boss wrote a letter of his own. It was an apology to Trump, which Roffman signed.

But Trump wasn't satisfied. He wanted changes to the letter, saying the Taj Mahal would be successful. Roffman said no.

"And of course," he says, "they fired me on the spot."

The Trump Taj Mahal opened for business in April 1990. "We've broken every record," Trump told CNN's Larry King at the time.

"You're seeing numbers that nobody's ever before. It's a great building."
The Taj Mahal brought in enormous piles of money that summer. But when the cold winds of October came, the casino missed its first debt payment. By 1991, the Taj Mahal was in bankruptcy court.

I respectfully disagree...while many students may have worked, they've hardly paid any, let alone enough to cover tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars...

Federal Student Loans
  • Origin: Federal student loans are directly provided by the U.S. government through the Department of Education.
  • Types: Common types include Direct Subsidized Loans, Direct Unsubsidized Loans, and Direct PLUS Loans.
  • Guarantee: These loans are fully guaranteed by the government, meaning the government assumes the risk if borrowers default.
Private Student Loans
  • Origin: Private student loans are issued by banks, credit unions, and other financial institutions.
  • Government Role: While these loans are not directly funded by the government, they may still be backed by federal programs in certain cases, such as through guarantees or insurance.
  • Terms: Private loans typically have less favorable terms compared to federal loans, including higher interest rates and fewer repayment options.
SummaryIn summary, federal student loans are government money, while private student loans are not directly funded by the government but may have some government backing.

In an additional legal issue, on February 8, 2005, Trump had closed on a construction loan of $640 million from Deutsche Bank for the project.[110] He also obtained a $130–135 million junior mezzanine loan from another syndicate headed by Fortress Investment Group.[111][112] As part of these contracts, Trump had included a $40 million personal guarantee.[113] The contracts also mandated partial repayments for each closed unit sale, and minimum sale prices.[111] In September 2008, due to slow unit sales, Trump sought to extend both loans until mid-2009 because he felt that it was necessary in the business environment and expected from the outset of the contract.[114] On November 10, Deutsche Bank demanded the outstanding loan payment and the $40 million guarantee.[113] Trump filed suit later that month against Deutsche Bank in New York State Supreme Court in an effort to excuse a repayment of more than $330 million that had been due November 7, and to extend the construction loan for an unspecified period of time because of extenuating circumstances during the 2008 financial crisis.[113] Trump cited a "force majeure" clause that allowed the borrower to delay completion of the project under a catch-all section covering "any other event or circumstance not within the reasonable control of the borrower".[111] Trump not only sought an extension, but sought damages of $3 billion from the bank for its use of predatory lending practices to undermine the project and damage his reputation, which he claimed "is associated worldwide with on-time, under-budget, first-class construction projects and first-class luxury hotel operations."[111] At the end of November, Deutsche Bank countersued Trump to force him to uphold his personal payment guarantee from February 2005, after he failed to repay the amount due November 7—a date that already had been extended.[113]

They charge, you pay.
If you take a loan out to pay that business, where did that money come from?
Not the school you're attending, is it?
