So why aren't you LWNJ's protesting the tariffs BRAZIL imposes on US goods?? That hurts American business, effects American jobs, and prevents economic growth as much as US tariffs on Brazil ever could. NO ONE is making you buy goods from Brazil. That's YOUR CHOICE. Just like no one in Brazil is making them buy US made goods.

You are correct. I had not thought to check whether there was a discrepancy in our repective tariff schedules previous to Trump's announcement. There is. Brazil has a higher tariff schedule on our goods - and on everyone's goods - than we did on theirs.

That said, Trump's announcement of the tariffs was predicated on how Bolsonaro is being treated. And it was announced to the global media without any attempt to bring Lula's government to the table. Tariffs should be about trade, and about American consumers' interests, exclusively - not about punishing personal grudges. 

It should not be stepped over is that Brazil is a developing economy. When the US was in that circumstance, it had across the board tariffs on all imported goods, as does Brazil. Indeed, when the Constitution was passed, 100% of the federal government's income derived from impost and excise taxes - meaning imported goods that were manufactured were hit twice, doubling their price at market. Brazil does not treat the US any differently than it treats fellow BRICS member China. It should also be noted that Brazil's membership in Mercosur ties its hands on some tariffs. 

There is no such thing as "fair." The fair is a celebration in the fall, and "fair" is a false construct that mothers teach their children, setting them up for disappointment. What matters is a deal that is workable for and acceptable to all parties. And what is workable for all parties gets hammered out at tables, by underlings, and only then signed off on by appropriate authorities. Putin does not negotiate trade deals. He directs negotiations, and he signs the deals. Underlings do the negotiating. Trump knows all of the smartest people - very smart people. They should be negotiating trade deals, at his direction.

You have to admit - well, you OUGHT to admit - that what we all expected was for Trump to MAKE DEALS - to bring foreign governments to the table and get agreements that work for US producers and consumers. Why all of this was not handled in his first term is anyone's guess - maybe too busy fending off the left's non-stop coup attempts. But here we are, and the work needs doing. And he ain't doing it. You don't make deals by announcing unilateral actions to the global media without so much as a phone call trying to make a deal first. He didn't even TRY to work anything out - to make any deal. He announced the tariffs as a punishment for an internal matter - specifically, how Bolsonaro is being treated. The world is watching, and they are seeing whim-based policy. And that is dangerous. That is unpredictable. That makes our friends nervous and our neutrals and enemies contemptuous. It makes dealing with us in any capacity dangerous, because at any time the deal can be abrogated on the whim of a fellow who doesn't appear to be very stable.

Countries have had more than 6 months to come to the table to negotiate trade deals. Some decided to do so. Those that haven't, get the tarriff increases. Call it wantever you want, it's a strategy that has been working, far better than anything the left or any other "right" administration has done. Free trade is a pipe dream when the OTHER side we trade with has barriers in place when we don't. Brazil is far from a developing nation. They have been around since the Portuguese took over as a trade post. Whatever you might claim isn't supported by the facts.  

Trump IS making deals, but when the players to the deal making on THE OTHER SIDE likes the "status quo", you upset that "status quo" to get them to sit down and do a deal. NO ONE is going to "make a deal" until THEIR comfort level is disrupted to the point they have to. YOU won't leave that comfy chair of yours UNTIL a spring breaks and pokes you in the ***. Neither do nations that don't have any reason to get up and go negotiate.

His tariffs on Brazil are against a nation which has a large trade deficit with us. The purpose of the tariffs is clearly not protectionist. The purpose is punitive and unrelated to trade. His tariffs on India are at least against a nation with which we have a trade deficit. But they are in response to India buying petro products from Russia. We're almost certainly just going to pay literally double for generic drugs, with no benefit accruing to American workers. 

We have a trade surplus with Netherlands, Australia, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. But Trump tariffed all. It had nothing to do with trade - and the promise was that the tariffs would have everything to do with trade. 

Trump did a bait and switch. And the die-hard MAGA are not smart enough to see it. I supported tariffs. But adult tariffs.Targeted tariffs. Not tariffs against the moon. Not tariffs against the planet. EACH AND EVERY ONE of these tariffs are a tax on the American consumer. Trump is raising our taxes like it's a Christmas sale. And because tariffs are paid by the importer at landfall, Americans are not merely paying the tariffs. The importer now has an additional cash investment that must make a profit - so Americanb consumers pay well above the tariff rate. 

And I was okay with this - if it helped workers. If it was targeted. If it was against nations that were "taking advantage." If it was a TRADE TOOL. But tariffs have turned into a gun we gave a monkey - and there are no more frightening combined words in the english language than monkey and pistol. Monkey Pistol is just nota thing ya wanna hear about.

You are correct as I'm not sure what's happening with Brazil and the India thing is wrong...

the EU, however, as a conglomerate, applies a VAT tax to everything ranging from 17% to 27%...it's and automatic built in tariff...

The bottom line is, that the UNITED STATES has become a DEBTOR NATION because of so many BAD trade deals, lack of them, and other nations taking full advantage of our open borders to trade. WE DON'T MAKE THINGS like this nation became great doing.
