"Try to get past your passionate ignorance and learn to accept what actually happened." ~ brown's unheeded words of wisdom The VAT contributes roughly 7.5 percent of the total revenue for the European Union, with member states contributing a standardized 0.3% of their total VAT income to the EU budget as VAT-based resources.Cannonpointer » 08 Aug 2025, 5:16 pm » wrote: ↑ No.
The MEMBER STATES have VAT taxes - not the EU.
The EU does not lay or collect taxes. It gets it's money from member states.
And locally produced goods get the VAT, as well - so by definition it is NOT a tariff.
No one needs to prove the obvious. That's just silly. Can you prove that all income taxes come from income?
Prove it. Prove that income taxes come from income - you can't.
Are you aware of another payer of excise taxes? Name that payer. Is it santy claws?

The member states kick - the EU neither lays nor collects taxes. They get paid FROM VAT taxes.By the member states.ROG62 » 08 Aug 2025, 6:24 pm » wrote: ↑ The VAT contributes roughly 7.5 percent of the total revenue for the European Union, with member states contributing a standardized 0.3% of their total VAT income to the EU budget as VAT-based resources.
They COULD be. Bruce Jenner is called a woman - does that make him one?ROG62 » 08 Aug 2025, 6:24 pm » wrote: ↑ they wouldn't be labeled "income taxes" if they weren't, right?

His tariffs on Brazil are against a nation which has a large trade deficit with us. The purpose of the tariffs is clearly not protectionist. The purpose is punitive and unrelated to trade. And by now, it should be understood by everyone on this board that every penny of every tariff comes from the pockets of American consumers - not from the target country. Tariffs are inflationary - and that's okay, if they effectively bring jobs home for workers. I'm good with paying extra. But just to prosecute petty grudges? Not so much.
His tariffs on India are at least against a nation with which we have a trade deficit. But they are in response to India buying petro products from Russia. Trump is using tariffs not to protect American jobs, as he had promised; but rather, as a foreign policy tool, at the expense of American consumers. We MIGHT see a few pharma jobs out of these tariffs, but it's highly unlikely. We're almost certainly just going to pay literally double for generic drugs, with no benefit accruing to American workers.
We have a trade surplus with Netherlands, Australia, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. But Trump tariffed all. It had nothing to do with trade - and the promise was that the tariffs would have everything to do with trade.
Trump did a bait and switch. And the die-hard MAGA are not smart enough to see it. I supported tariffs. But adult tariffs.Targeted tariffs. Not tariffs against the moon. Not tariffs against the planet. EACH AND EVERY ONE of these tariffs are a tax on the American consumer. Trump is raising our taxes like it's a Christmas sale. And because tariffs are paid by the importer at landfall, Americans are not merely paying the tariffs. The importer now has an additional cash investment that must make a profit - so Americanb consumers pay well above the tariff rate.
And I was okay with this - if it helped workers. If it was targeted. If it was against nations that were "taking advantage." If it was a TRADE TOOL. But tariffs have turned into a gun we gave a monkey - and there are no more frightening combined words in the english language than monkey and pistol. Monkey Pistol is just nota thing ya wanna hear about.
We have an orangutan spraying an automatic tariff rifle indiscriminately, with a **** eating grin on his mug.
