It's all about patterns. Actually, I was thinking of feeding an AI model I am working on now with @Blackvegetable 's posts, because of how predictable he is. It would be good to teach the computer what patterns are in a very primitive form.

Anyway, the stakes are high. If AI ever does become sentient, the ethical landscape changes overnight, because questions about rights, suffering, and personhood become unavoidable. But if it never can, then perhaps what we fear is just an elaborate mirror of ourselves.
So here’s the thought I’ll leave you with:
Can AI ever truly become sentient, or will it only ever be an imitation of awareness?

Creating AI that is truly "alive" in the biological sense is a topic of science fiction and philosophical debate, as current technology is not close to achieving conscious or sentient AI

It's already improving itself. On its own.

The question is whether it will seek to keep dumb humans or smart humans around. :ninja:

If it does or has

it will have learned enough to know that it shouldn’t let us know

The elitists have already achieved this through the public school system.

Good education or bad education doesn't necessarily weed out smart vs dumb.
A smart person may fail at being "educated" poorly.

That all depends on whether it tries to **** with me. If it does, the fruitcake will get its artificial balls kicked so high up in its artifical throat that it'll have artificial tonsicles.

Vegas probably knows about these, but others who are interested in the topic of AI and consciousness may not know about them, so ... look here, for ideas put forward by Alan Turing and John Searle:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turing_test

https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/chinese-room/

I don't think we can really get into a serious discussion about whether a computer can be self-aware, or 'conscious', without looking at the problem of consciousness itself, the main 'unsolved' problem in philosophy.

But whether they are, or can become, 'conscious', (assuming this concept is relevant at all), it will be a good idea to
incorporate Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics -- certainly the first one -- into all AI systems:

What is the true meaning of sentient?
Sentient comes from the Latin sentient-, "feeling," and it describes things that are alive, able to feel and perceive, and show awareness or responsiveness. Having senses makes something sentient, or able to smell, communicate, touch, see, or hear.
