Based on federal prosecutors and court filings, Donald Trump repeatedly refused to return hundreds of classified documents and took steps to obstruct the government's efforts to retrieve them. In August 2022, after a protracted effort to recover the materials, FBI agents executed a search warrant at his Mar-a-Lago estate and seized over 100 additional classified documents. The criminal case against Trump related to this was dismissed in July 2024, but the former president was accused of significant obstruction.
