The Leahy Law is a U.S. law that prohibits the government from providing military or other assistance to foreign security force units if there is credible information that the unit has committed gross violations of human rights (GVHRs). The law, named for Senator Patrick Leahy, has two main components: one for the Department of State and one for the Department of Defense, and aims to hold foreign security forces accountable for abuses such as torture, extrajudicial killings, and enforced disappearances. The law allows for assistance to continue if the foreign government takes "effective steps" to bring those responsible to justice. ====================
