WASHINGTON -- The Justice Department posted pardons online bearing identical copies of President Donald Trump’s signature before quietly correcting them this week after what the agency called a “technical error.”
The replacements came after online commenters seized on striking similarities in the president's signature across a series of pardons dated Nov. 7, including those granted to former New York Mets player Darryl Strawberry, former Tennessee House speaker Glen Casada and former New York police sergeant Michael McMahon. In fact, the signatures on several pardons initially uploaded to the Justice Department's website were identical, two forensic document experts confirmed to The Associated Press.
Within hours of the online speculation, the administration replaced copies of the pardons with new ones that did not feature identical signatures. It insisted Trump, who mercilessly mocked his predecessor’s use of an autopen, had originally signed all the Nov. 7 pardons himself and blamed “technical” and staffing issues for the error, which has no bearing on the validity of the clemency actions.

Zhao, who in 2017 founded what would later become the largest crypto exchange in the world, pleaded guilty in late 2023 to one felony charge of failing to maintain an effective anti-money laundering" program at Binance. While the primary Binance platform was not permitted to serve US customers, the company actively encouraged US-based users to circumvent Binance’s own geofencing, with CZ instructing: “On the surface we cannot be seen to have US users but in reality, we should get them through other creative means.” Binance was simultaneously aware that it was offering services to sanctioned users, with the company’s Chief Compliance Officer writing that “There is no fking way in hell I am signing off as the CCO for the ofac ****” out of fear he could go to jail. (OFAC is the Treasury office that administers sanctions.) Another compliance team member acknowledged the prevalence of illicit activity on Binance, writing: “we need a banner ‘is washing drug money too hard these days - come to binance we got cake for you’.” In discussions regarding Binance’s use by designated terror groups like ISIS and Hamas, or sanctioned customers from Russia, Binance’s CCO urged other employees not to freeze the assets, and acknowledged “Like come on. One of the least debatable aspects of the Donald Trump presidency is that he and his family have been personally profiting from the office. Estimates of the amount they have earned vary, but it is probably in the hundreds of millions to low billions of dollars.
The bulk of the money appears to have come from various cryptocurrency enterprises launched mostly by his sons Eric and Donald Jr., but ample millions have also come from the hundreds of products — Bibles, guitars, perfume and more — for sale at the Trump Store and other outlets.
Add to that the transfer of a jumbo jet from the Qatari government and allegations of pardons being granted in exchange for money.
This long list has led to widespread charges that the graft and corruption represent a threat to our democracy. But do they really amount to that?
While the scale of the Trump administration’s profiting and self-dealing is a sharp break from the past century, it is not a sharp break from American history.
