I've known too many black people over the years to not believe that.

You have very crudely worded the notion but it does resonate with people in general:
You can overcome your roots, defects, lot in life. Nothing locks you in but yourself.

I had some major hurdles myself. As a young child you don't know **** and can be relatively happy.
Then you start to notice the real world beyond yourself. By the time you've reached the tween years, it's fairly obvious you aren't in heaven and need to build a ladder to get out of the hell hole... or accept your fate and be a piece of human debris.

I tried being human debris for a short time. I said, **** that. I can build that ladder in spite of the assholes around me saying it won't go anywhere. Ya gotta stop looking over your shoulder and persevere.

My life changed when I left home and went on the road at age 16

from the backwoods to Coral Gables was a huge shock....

but my first prime rib at a restaurant called the Flame on  US 1, Dixie Highway is what actually changed my life

a compete "WTF is this ****" moment that I will carry happily to my grave...

I was a cutting torch guy on old railroad cars at a scrapyard. After about a hundred cars and nearly getting squashed a dozen times, I had about all a 18-19 year needs to learn about that. Moved closer to Detroit so the real fun could begin...

A wtf moment for me was when a blob of manganese burned off about a third of my ponytail.
I didn't mind the second degree burn on my neck as much as that wad of hair in my gloved hand that day...

I was rough neckin' at the time....I went to FM radio and then into off site oil field equipment and pipe sales...

I liked the chicks that hung around the oil patches and the guys are party hard people...lot of them are dead and have been for a long time

Too many hours and too much risk makes a tired boy dead

but at some point it's time to grow up
