Republicans in the House of Representatives added language to a must-pass spending bill Tuesday that would speed up the confirmation of retired Gen. James Mattis for secretary of defense, Politico reported.
The action forces Democrats to either go along or risk a government shutdown. The deadline to pass the short-term spending bill is Friday.
Democrats are actually likely to go along with granting a waiver for Mattis, but as usual Republicans have to act like a bunch of bullies.
Not all Republicans are in favor of doing it that way.
By including language to aid Mattis in the government funding bill, Republicans could use the specter of a government shutdown to attract Democratic votes to help Mattis get confirmed.
But it could also backfire if Democrats oppose any effort to fast-track Mattis’ confirmation, turning a sleepy fight over government funding past Dec. 9 into a different battle altogether.
Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Texas), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said he favors tackling the waiver in January.
“It is a significant issue. It needs appropriate attention, so … I am not in favor of trying to tack it onto a CR and ram it through,” Thornberry said. “It needs to have due deliberation.”
