Things I learned by watching Rachel Maddow. The Republicans are not just content to bust up unions to help them win elections, they are also working feverishly to make it more difficult for people who tend to vote Democratic to vote.In New Hampshire, a Republican lawmaker has introduced legislation that would only let college students vote in their college towns if they or their parents had previously established permanent residency there, even though the The U.S. Supreme Court has affirmed that if you are living somewhere to attend college there, you can vote there. That lawmaker even admitted that college students tend to vote liberal, because you know, 'that's what kids do. They don‘t have life experience and they just vote their feelings.'Another New Hampshire bill would end election day registration, which would disproportionately impact first-time voters and young voters, who are more likely to vote Democratic. In Wisconsin, they are trying to pass a law that says that Student ID's will no longer be an acceptable form of ID to vote.Over in Texas, Governor Rick Perry has put a restrictive new voter ID law into his emergency budget legislation. Of course there's an exemption for people with concealed carry gun permits. Gee, I wonder how they are most likely to vote. (BTW, Perry has also added a little gem into his budget bill that would force women to have ultrasounds if they wanted to be allowed to get an abortion. I wonder what that has to do with solving the budget issue?)Right now, in 2011, Republicans in 32 states are considering adding more onerous ID requirements to make it harder to register and harder to vote, which should combined with their union busting tactics should bring down the number of Democratic voters nicely in time for the 2012 presidential election.
