The infotainment industry doesn't really even PRETEND it doesn't try to drive sales any more, so this is hardly a conspiracy theory.
And are you saying that people should not prepare for an oncoming hurricane by stocking up on some of those things?
They shouldn't protect their homes and prepare to be without power and maybe running water?
They shouldn't stock up on food in the event that even if grocery stores are open, they may not be able to get to them?

I don't see any retailers running ads before a hurricane pushing the items you mentioned.
People stock up on those things because they want to be prepared to go without power and they want to be able to eat and drink should they be trapped in their homes for several days.
It's just plain common sense.
