Yes, you are back to appearance.  If they were designed for combat they would be standard issue in the military.  They are not.  Why?  Because they are semi automatic.  You don't like the weapons because their appearance is why you claim a certain group of people are attracted to them.

You can not give one reason pertaining to functionality of the weapons in question as to why they should be banned.  And looking at gun sales this year any measure like that will fail.
