The original AR15 was designed for combat. The AR15 Sporter was a very short lived VERSION of the original design, modified to make it legal for civilan sale.

The "Colt AR15 style" sporting thing is a semiautomatic variant of the M-16 - a weapon designed for combat, borrowing many principles of the original AR15 design.

Period.

That is not what you were asked:

Whcih weapon are you discussing:

1.  The Arnalite 10/15?

2.  The M16?

3.  The Colt AR 15 Sporter, the original semiautomatic sport rifle platform?

At this point you need to explain what was modified.  What was changed to make a civilian design is what need to explain. But it is a moot point.  You can ban the Original Sporter all you like.  No **** problem.  But the today's AR 15 semi automatics were not designed for the battlefield.  You have no argument.  

We are far from done.  If you can not tell me which particular weapon you are talking about and what was allegedly modified I can't respond.  Additionally, todays Semi Automatics have nothing to do with that.
