The only reason Israel "supported" Hamas in the beginning was because they felt Hamas was more palatable to work with than the PLO. It seems the Palestinians thought the same thing.
If anything, the "support" of Hamas early on signified that Israel was still holding onto the idea of a two State solution due to the fact that they were trying to influence what political group they were hoping to negotiate with in the future.
At the time, they felt Hamas was the better option out of the two.
