I gotta go with the jury on this one.  The father bought the gun for him.  People under 21 are not supposed to have one in michigan, or by federal law.  If the kid was 18, different story.  

ANd with the kid's mental health issues he should have known better.

From what I have read, I don't believe the father made the purchase for the son specifically, but also didn't hide the fact that he had it from his son either... and even took him to the range to shoot it a couple of times.

It's sounds like the kid took the gun, which was unsecured, to school without his parents knowledge.

Something else I recall from the story was the parents had been called to the school the morning of the shooting by administration for a meeting over some disturbed drawings the kid has made that day at school. The pistol was in his back pack, at school that day, during the meeting... but wasn't discovered.

If the parents are liable, then so are the administrators at the school... since they had the kid and possibly the firearm in their office at some point that very day, but never bothered to look in the kid's backpack.
