In 2013, Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych rejected the European Union’s offer to join, in favor of a Russian offer. He had been duly elected in balloting that international observers considered "reasonably free and fair" - which is about as high a ranking as a democracy can get. His term of service would expire two years later in 2016.
Pissed off pro-western demonstrators filled the Ukrainian equivalent of Red Square or the Washington Mall (Maidan). Western leaders made it clear that they supported the efforts of demonstrators to force Yanukovych to reverse course and approve the EU agreement or, if he would not do so, to remove the president before his term expired. Sen. John McCain, who was the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee at the time, went to Kiev to show solidarity with the Euromaidan activists. McCain dined with opposition leaders, including members of the ultra right‐wing Svoboda Party - basically neo-nazis, - and later appeared on stage in Maidan Square during a mass rally. He stood shoulder to shoulder with Svoboda leader Oleg Tyagnibok.
Just so ya get the flavor? Tyahnybok wants to introduce an "ethnicity" section into Ukrainian passports. He is an open far right racist. He wants to pass a Ukrainian Only language barrier for employment in Ukraine's civil service, and to declare Ukrainian as the "official language" of Ukraine - something you have been instructed to consider racist in the United States. He also wants to re-establish Ukraine as a nuclear power.
Victoria Nuland, Obama's assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian Affairs, and her subordinates, were very open and brazen in favoring and encouraging a coup. Nuland made several trips, on one of which she handed out cookies in
Kyiv's Independence Square (aka Maidan). She was famously recorded saying **** the E.U. if they won't step up and get their hands dirty (paraphrased). In that call - intercepted and released by Russian intelligence, she was picking cabinet members in the new government which the Obama administration intended to (and did) cause to be installed.
Another Nuland intercept rendered these gems: “We want to try to get somebody with an international personality to come out here and help to midwife this thing;" and, based on a promise from a top Biden aide, “...probably tomorrow for an atta‐boy and to get the details to stick. So Biden’s willing.”
Both the Obama administration and most of the American news media portrayed the coup as a spontaneous, popular uprising against a corrupt and brutal government. A February 24, 2014, Washington Post editorial celebrated the Maidan demonstrators and their successful campaign to overthrow Yanukovych. The “moves were democratic,” the Washington Post concluded, and “Kiev is now controlled by pro‐Western parties.”

The government Russia is toppling was put in place NOT by Ukrainians, but by beltway operatives all the way up to the Vice President of the United States. It is not a legitimate government.
