I've found US remakes to be pretty solid. Insomnia (Originally Norwegian) was quite well done. As was The Departed (Japanese). The Magnificent Seven was a remake of a Kurosawa film - The Seven Samurai. A brilliant movie. Even the US remake was good, which is rare.
The thing about American remakes of foreign films is that the originals are invariably quite stellar, and the remakes spare no expense in talent or production costs.
