Pride is why. Protestant work ethic. Blue collar mores. It's in the upbringing. 

I've had jobs where I got **** on and mistreated, and I still gave 100% until the day I fired them. I ride for the brand, and I'm a top hand. That is how I was raised, and I am helpless to be less than my best at work, even when I WANT to **** the man. I have put in overtime when I was exhausted, for supervisors I despised. Because the team needed me - and I didn't like the team, either. 

I'm not confuting your advice. I gave ya greenies. But I could never take your advice. It's a violation of the prime directive. No matter WHAT, those mother **** will never turn ME into a slacker. I'm a star. I'm a top hand. I'm a producer. They're gonna miss me, the stupid ****. And they're gonna respect me - even if they come to that respect too late to salvage the relationship. 

When I leave a company, there should be an exit interview at which HR makes a pitch to keep me. And those responsible for getting the work completed should have a crisis on their hands, because when I leave a team, there's a big **** hole.
