Are rare earth metals so precious that a war cannot be fought and won without having a veritable mountain of the stuff?

Sometimes I think we are like dogs and somebody yelled "SQUIRREL!"   Again.
I don't doubt the stuff is absolutely useful for our needs, but suddenly it's the ONLY thing. Again.

Tired of being whipsawed with the "latest ****" all the time. Stopped watching MSM long ago because of it.
