Much depends on where you live.
The best jobs [high end] in new construction and in remodels usually goes to union labor.
I've worked both ends of that spectrum.
You don't need the IBEW to become an electrician. Ever. There are countless Community Colleges you can go to and get the education and usually there are places hiring to get that practical application at the same time. 2 years TOPS to become a State recognized Master electrician. Pass the State boards in many States, and no Union anything needed. Trust me, the IBEW is all about UNION DUES and taking their sweet time in going up the ladder The higher you climb, the more you knock out of positions of seniority because of your skills.
