In Pew’s validated voter analysis of the 2020 election (the 2024 validated results are not yet available), voters with post-graduate degrees supported Joe Biden over Trump by 67-to-32, a 35-point margin. Those with a high-school education or less supported Trump by 15 points.
The workforce of universities and colleges, where research is peer-reviewed and theories untethered to facts tend to have limited shelf lives, is not a natural constituency for the political coalition of climate denial, Covid falsehoods, Jan. 6 truthing, QAnon and the like. As the Republican Party has grown ever more dependent on falsehoods and conspiracy theories, one professor after another has exposed such talking points as fraud.
Over the years, the right-wing media has given enormous (and often inaccurate) attention to elite liberal colleges’ annoying tics of political correctness. But it’s not ponderous invocations of the tribal land on which a school sits, or complaints about the authenticity of ethnic food, that has inspired attacks from the Trump administration. It’s the capacity of experts armed with research to destroy MAGA mythologies about society, economics and history.
