Companies no longer outsource to China because of cheap labor. In fact, it isn't cheap anymore there. They outsource there for their skill. In other words, American engineers evidently suck. Americans suck at a lot of things. Our society is just plain **** stupid. We have Ivy Leagues that produce morons like @Blackvegetable  . Can you imagine a team of engineers that are all similar to him? 

My solution. Though nobody asked. 

Our lack of skill is no excuse for us to remain dependent on foreign production. If Cook’s statement is genuine, then the solution is simple: invest in training a highly skilled domestic manufacturing workforce. Clearly the government doesn't give a **** either. Or at least the private companies should establish such a pipeline. It would give them  a front row seat to the talent. Tax incentives, public-private apprenticeships, and trade school pipelines focused on precision electronics and engineering would not only bring jobs home, but eventually close the so-called “skill gap” that companies like Apple use to justify offshoring.

If Apple really cares more about skill than saving money, then why haven’t they made the same kind of investment in training workers in other countries? The fact that they haven’t tried to build that kind of workforce outside of China makes it seem like “skill” might just be a nice-sounding excuse for sticking with a system that gives them more control and easier scaling.
