Funny thing.  One of the things my y brother in law gave me just befor e he passed last week was his AR 15.  It is one that would send a gunophobe like into a tizzy of a meltdown.  BUT,  between the two of us I am the only one with any experience with both weapons.  And the 15 is nothing like the 16.
