I don't have a problem with your metaphor, there. China is already that guy, with a lot of SE Asian countries displacing it in one area as it moves into another - same as what Japan went thru on the road from junk maker to high end provider.
China doesn't just make lighters and knives anymore. It makes cars. It exports more cars than than the US does by several times. It's neck and neck with europe - and europe's share of the auto market is toiletward bound, as the US has blown up its cheap gas supply. China's share of the car export market is set to explode as its quality continues to climb and europe's production capacity implodes. You wanna talk about a tariff? Try paying three times for energy what you paid three years ago. Give that a whirl. Now THAT is a donkey hoof to the face. We reserve THOSE for our firends.
Yeah, I remember (barely remember) the big Japan scare. They were taking over the Auto Industry, Electronics and buying up all of America's land. We have a real love-hate relationship with the Slants.
