Unlike you, I don't subscribe to the Wokie 21st century "Rules of Engagement.  I subscribe to the early Roman Jus Belli.  Rule #1, conquered states (including civilians) could be enslaved, looted, or annihilated if they resisted. This worked well for the Republic of Rome for over 1,000 years.  Then, they got more depraved and woke about how they approached war and governance over conquered territories.  Had they stuck to their original doctrine, we would all be typing in Latin.

Had the romans remained in charge, the typewriter would never have been invented. They didn't even possess zero in their stone-aged mathematorial agglomeration. 

And while we're on the topic, I believe you've mistaken rome for ghengis khan. The romans were not known for genocidal actions in retribution for failure to surrender. There is no general agreement among historians that rome EVER practiced genocide. Some argue that Carthage was genocidal in both intent and effect - and I agree with that camp. But pushing it any farther than that one-off is not widely accepted. 

You're thinking of the khans. 

When you find yourself defending genocide, your back is to the intellectual wall and you're using emotion and bravado to effect a rescue of a defeated thesis.
