Yes, carotenoids do that. You can get them from squash, pumpkin, and marigolds, as well. It's a nice way to get darker yolks and better flavor from hens'eggs. Sweet potatoes also work.
And all of the above are great for dogs, and my dogs and my hens get them all. IN MODERATION, in the case of the dogs. Your friend was **** up giving her animal so much that it showed up in that way. But if her dog was consuming them RAW, no harm no foul, I suspect. The amount of fiber in raw carrots would likely offset the amount of sugar.
