You're actually right.  The "recoil system" or shock absorber amounts to the entire barrel reciprocating upon firing a round.  The gas is ported to a "piston" in/on the barrel that causes the entire barrel assembly to recoil nearly 12 inches to eject the spent casing and chamber another round.
