It's important for all people [not just women] to realize that the Bad Guys have a jump on you. The only way to even your odds is by being quick to react.
The only way to accomplish that is with rehearsal. Mental and physical vrehearsal.
you might feel silly doing it..but the Bad Guys aren't going to let you CALL TIMEOUT to figure out how to operate your bear spray or to get your pistol ready to fire.
You need to be able to find the safety on the gun / reload with your eyes closed.

I know! One day a bunch of us were partying.. and drinking.. about five of us... 3 guys-two of us wimmins.
Now follow this.. The game was... we were all drunk. Could Cyndi get out of one of our grips!

me - very small.. it was a game!
One guy grabbed both my wrists with one hand... I couldn't move.!!!!!
That was THE day- it went home to me..
I realized..   I needed a gun! 
Never new the strength of a man compared to me! I am a smartarss. lol- not
