Imagine you have a giant jar of 10,000 jellybeans and you want to know if most of them are cherry-flavored. You could count every single one, but that would take forever!
Statistical sampling is like taking one big scoop from that jar. [1]
If you look at your scoop and see that almost all of those beans are red, you can make a really good guess that most of the beans in the whole jar are cherry too.
Here are the three simple rules to make it work:
1. The Population: That’s the whole jar (the big group you’re curious about).
2. The Sample: That’s your scoop (the small group you actually check).
3. Randomness: You have to close your eyes and stir the jar before you scoop. If you only took beans from the very top, your guess might be wrong!
So, sampling is just looking at a small part to understand the whole thing without doing all the work.
