Most notably, Nicholas Brown Sr. and John Brown invested in and directed slave-trading ships, such as the Sally in 1764. The 1764 voyage of the Sally resulted in disaster and massive loss of life for the enslaved Africans aboard, a tragedy that has been extensively documented by the university.
