First of all 501(c)(4)s aren't allowed to have political activities as their primary purpose.
The groups that were looked at had names that sounded political like 'Tea Party.'
Secondly this was a policy initiated by the IRS itself, not Obama.
In case you don't remember there were tons of groups that were springing up around that time and applying for tax exempt status, and the IRS needed a way to weed out the ones that were primarily political.
Of the 298 groups that were singled out for extra scrutiny, 72 had 'tea party' in the name, 13 had 'patriot' and 11 had '9/12', which was in reference to Glenn Beck's '9/12 movement.'
Can you name any groups that lost their tax exempt status?
