No...not "designed for"....Military weapons may be, but not those designed for combat, as the AR15 and M16 INDISPUTABLY were...you cannot legally purchase the military VARIANTS, but you can buy the design...
Weapons designed for use in contact are banned or if manufactured before 86 heavily restricted. The Colt At 15 sporter, as continuously posted was designed for civilians and cops.
As long as they have, and were designed specifically for, sporting applications...And as you say should not be banned.
and no...sitting in a lawnchair firing off a few hundred rounds doesn't qualify as "sport"...
